Commercial solar for Nova Scotia businesses.
We look at your building, its roof and how the business uses electricity, then plan the system and the electrical work with you. Our own Dartmouth-based crew handles design, permits, installation and inspections.
Is your property a good fit for solar?
Every building is different. We start with your bills and the roof, then confirm the details at a site visit.
-
Roof space, direction and pitch
Unshaded roof area facing the sun sets how large a system can be. We design to the roof you have.
-
Roof type and condition
We install on asphalt shingle and metal roofs, including standing seam and corrugated metal, and on flat roofs with mounting suited to the surface. If the roof needs work first, we tell you before installation.
-
Shading and surroundings
Neighbouring buildings, trees and rooftop equipment change production through the day and the year, so we account for them.
-
Your electricity use
Your bills show how much electricity the business uses, which tells us how much a system should aim to supply.
-
Electrical service and capacity
The building's service, panels and available capacity need to suit the new system. Our electricians check them and explain any upgrade before work begins.
-
Your plans for the property
Tell us about expansions, a re-roof or other plans, so the timing and the design fit what's ahead.
How a commercial solar project works
From the first conversation to switch-on, one team plans the solar and the electrical work. We give you a schedule for your project and keep you updated.

-
Initial assessment
We review your bills and the roof, then give you a proposed system size and estimated production.
-
Site visit
We inspect the roof, its condition and shading, and the building's electrical service, and confirm what we need to finish the design.
-
Design and proposal
We design the system around the roof and your electricity use, with engineering documents and a proposal you can review before deciding.
-
Permits, inspections and the utility
We take care of the permits, inspections and utility paperwork, and give you a schedule for the project.
-
Installation and switch-on
Our crew installs the system and makes the electrical connections. After the final inspection we energize it and set up monitoring, so you can see what it produces.
What the assessment gives you
A proposed system size
Sized to the roof and to the electricity the business uses.
Estimated production
For a full Nova Scotia year, including snow, cloud and shorter winter days.
The electrical work involved
Whether the panel, service or available capacity needs an upgrade, explained before work begins.
The steps and the timing
The permits, inspections and utility steps for your project, and a schedule.
Net metering for businesses
NS Power has a separate Commercial Net Metering Program for business customers who generate their own renewable electricity. Eligibility, system size and terms depend on your account and can change, so we check the current requirements for your property during the assessment and include the utility steps in your project.
NS Power: Commercial Net Metering Program (opens in a new tab)One local team for the solar and the electrical work
JC Power Solutions is based in Dartmouth and led by James, a Red Seal electrician. Our own crews do the solar and electrical work, so the panels, the wiring and any upgrade are planned together.
We work with businesses across our service area: Halifax Regional Municipality, the Annapolis Valley, Truro, New Glasgow, Antigonish, Sheet Harbour, Bridgewater, and Liverpool.
Questions from business owners
Do you install solar for businesses?
Yes. We plan and install solar for commercial properties across our service area, starting with an assessment of the building, its roof and its electricity use.
What kinds of roofs can you install on?
Asphalt shingle and metal roofs, including standing seam and corrugated metal, and flat roofs with mounting suited to the surface. We confirm suitability at the site visit.
Will the building's electrical service need an upgrade?
It depends on the service, the panels and the capacity available. Our electricians check them during the assessment and explain any upgrade before the job begins.
Who handles permits, inspections and the utility?
We do. We take care of the permits, inspections and utility paperwork, and keep you updated on the schedule.
What does a commercial system cost?
Cost depends on the roof, the system size, the equipment and any electrical work. You receive a proposal after we assess the property. Programs and utility terms change, so we confirm what applies to your account rather than assume it.
Will solar keep the business running during an outage?
No. A grid-tied system shuts down during an outage so line crews can work safely. Backup power needs a separate solution, such as a generator connection.
Do you work outside Halifax?
Yes. We're based in Dartmouth and serve Halifax Regional Municipality, the Annapolis Valley, Truro, New Glasgow, Antigonish, Sheet Harbour, Bridgewater, and Liverpool.
